Minor in Photography

Seeing our world through a creative lens.

In a world filled with commonplace camera phone pictures, what do you need to know to take excellent photographs? In our photography minor at Marian, you will learn the art of taking great photographs by understanding visual elements and principles including composition, lighting, and how to see your subject in innovative ways.

Why choose photography at Marian?

You will be introduced to a breadth of photographic experiences including traditional film photography (camera handling to darkroom film and print processes) to digital photography and printing. Your studio work is supported by 24/7 access to a lighting studio, darkroom, and digital lab. In addition to learning the art and craft of photography, you will become familiar with the history of photography and its significant practitioners.

Throughout your studies in photography, you will be mentored by our Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist whose assignments from across the globe have included more than forty-seven countries. Discovering your own distinct engagement with photography is emphasized throughout the studio minor, and you will complete your studies with a portfolio of photographs ready to support your future interests image-making.
