Benton Schafer '09

Associate Insurance Broker and Consultant
MBC, Inc.

Bachelor of Science Degree,
Major in Biology,
Minor in Chemistry
School of Mathematics and Sciences

“Academically, I have the tools and knowledge I need to succeed. The ability to think like a scientist gives me an upper hand. I am prepared to succeed, learn, teach, adapt, and innovate. Athletically, even though I have since ‘hung my boots’ from the game of soccer, I owe a lot to my experiences as a studentathlete. I learned the importance of leadership and how the emotions and actions of one man can bring an entire group to success, as well as failure.”

Schafer was a four-year starter and two-year captain on the men’s varsity soccer team and served as the team’s representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. He was treasurer of the Science Club, the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab event coordinator for the Green Life Club, and a member of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization. Schafer also wrote a research paper titled Spatial Relationship of Beaver Canals to Beaver-cut Stumps, which was published as a conference abstract at the Indiana Academy of Sciences 2008 meeting in Evansville, Indiana.

Marian University’s close proximity to Indianapolis, coupled with the support from his friends and family led Benton Schafer to attend Marian University. Before arriving for his first day on campus, Schafer knew that he would excel in three very important areas: academics, athletics, and social life.

Schafer earned the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, the Sister Mary Rose Stockton Scholarship, the Purichia Biology Scholarship Award, and the Sister Adele Zahn Award for Excellence in Humanities. He also won the Veterans Student-Athlete Academic Award twice for being Marian University’s top male student-athlete. Schafer works at MBC, Inc., a family company, as an associate insurance broker and consultant. Following in both his father-inlaw’s and grandfather’s footsteps, he hopes to take over the family business in the near future.
