I have never had the privilege to work with a more dedicated and passionate group of professors. I respect their opinions, their thoughts, and the prowess of their knowledge. They have had a profound impact on my growth, both intellectually and personally.

From an early age, Jessica Davis had a passion for animals and, after a memorable high school anatomy lab, she knew working with them was her calling. Davis supplemented her collegiate studies with an internship at the Indianapolis Zoo, where she led “Creature Features,” a program where she educated students and parents interactively about the ways animals are suited for their environment. She also cared for the animals during routine feeding and cleaning.

Davis spent three weeks in South Africa where she gained handson experience with large game animals, including routine health checks, game transports, and treatments aimed at reducing poaching of endangered wildlife. This experience is what solidified her career path.

“Wildlife face much bigger issues today than ever before. An active and concerted effort focused on ecosystem health, habitat preservation, and restoration of the land is what’s needed. And that’s what I am interested in—the human impact on ecosystems and the organisms in them. It is responsible stewardship in action.”

Davis credits her success to her Marian University professors. “I have never had the privilege to work with a more dedicated and passionate group of professors. I respect their opinions, their thoughts, and the prowess of their knowledge. They have had a profound impact on my growth, both intellectually and personally. They are part of the reason why I work so diligently. I want to make them proud.”

Davis is currently the assistant director of the Center for Earth and Environmental Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). She received a full-ride scholarship to the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI and is planning to graduate in spring 2016 with a master of public affairs degree in urban sustainability.
