“My advisor and my science professors guided me along each step of the way.”

Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville, Indiana. “I was blessed with excellent grades,” she says, “and I could have gone to school just about anywhere.” She chose Marian University for a whole lot of reasons—not the least of which was the ability to prepare for a career in medicine. Because she is a 21st Century Scholar, a portion of her tuition is paid for by the state. And, the university’s San Damiano Scholars Program gives Solis additional financial support, along with the spiritual grounding to turn her calling into a reality.

“The 21st Century Scholars Program is fantastic. There’s always someone there to help you when you need it, and you can tell how much they care,” she says.

“After working as a certified nursing assistant in nursing homes and home health, I have felt a calling to work with the elderly,” says Solis. “I feel that I can best serve my patients as a doctor. I want to strive for holistic care that treats the body, mind, and spirit. I will begin studies at Indiana University School of Medicine in fall 2011.”

How does being a San Damiano Scholar support Solis’ future as a doctor? “It’s a ministry,” she says. “A lot of passion and compassion go into medicine. Taking care of the body is like taking care of the soul. It’s about dignity of the individual.”

With the help of the supportive Marian University community and the guidance of her excellent professors, Solis feels that she has built the necessary foundation to live a life of effective ministry. “My advisor and my science professors guided me along each step of the way,” Solis says.
